- Interplanetary Communication – One of the most difficult communication processes is between men and women. Unlike Star Trek, we do not have a universal translator to bridge the gaps between men and women.
- Be Specific! You have to be careful what you ask for, you’re just liable to get it. Make sure it is what you want, before you ask for it.
- How far is North? Most instructions are clear to the instructor, but not to the person being instructed. Makeing sure the other person has the same word picture as you, increases the opportunity for success.
- Body Talk – Most communication is based on what is Not said and how it is Not said. Physical gestures, postures, voluntary and involuntary actions can change the meaning of what you just said.
- Filters are a fact – Communication is difficult because of the many differences in people. These include: age, gender, cultural heritage, geographic location, social standing, education and life experiences. These can become barriers to communication when they are not recognized.
- Communication through Coordination – Effective communication is a negotiation process. We must constantly strive for understanding others and finding “agreement” if we wish to be effective. That means we should speak less and listen more.
- Someone else is driving your wagon! When people find themselves too embarrassed to tell “the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” phone calls are not returned and stories become slanted. This is called “avoidance” and YOU are no longer driving your wagon.
- Needing vs. Wanting – There are very few things in life you NEED. There may be many things in your life you WANT. Knowing the difference and being able to communicate it is important.
